like you, who put their "thinkbutton" to work in order to
make our world a more healthy, peaceful and beautiful place to live
A person is never
too young to become involved in causes that better our planet. At 7
years of age Ocean Robbins realized his mission of joining together
with other youth to bring environmental awareness and peace to the forefront.
Today his organization "Yes" (Youth for Environmental Sanity) inspires
and empowers young people from 45 nations to fight pollution and ecological
destruction. Through rallies and retreats he challenges the youth of
the world to get involved in positive causes instead of becoming a victim
and living with the consequences of others wrongdoing.
Creative Expression: Robert
Frost poetic
hero
How does one define
a hero? Poet, Robert Frost (1874 - 1963), is considered by many to be
one of the most known and loved poets in American history. Although
he spent the first forty years of his life farming and supporting his
family, only writing when time allowed, he spent the last 40 years creating
such memorable works as "Birches", "Mending Wall", "After Apple Picking'
and "The Road Not Taken". His flowing lyrics intertwine the pastoral
beauty of New England with philosophical insight that continues to inspire,
intrigue and enrich our lives. Frost's lifelong journey down the "road
not taken" continues on as we remember a poetic hero who's works capture
the spirit of America.
Social
Understanding: Gerda Weissmann Klein
human rights activist
One often finds
it difficult to take personal hardship and turn it into positive energy.
Gerda Weissmann Klein is a holocaust survivor who has taken her early
life experiences of oppression, abuse and starvation and transformed
them into a mission of hope for human dignity and rights. She formed
the Klein Foundation which offers educational programs for youth that
center around issues of hope, tolerance and acceptance as well as the
organization, "KNOW Hunger", which develops community efforts to combat
hunger. She has won many honors and lectured to thousands about her
experiences and the need to fight for human rights across the globe.
She has taught us that one may rise above and learn from negative experiences
in order to help others overcome their hardships.
