"Sylvester
Allred has been teaching biology to anyone in his vicinity for
as long as he can remember. On a hike in the Grand Canyon he identifies
myriads of flowers, cacti, and trees. Around a campfire at a National
Park campground he shares the stories of the squirrels that inhabit
the area. He has taught field courses in Zion National Park and
at Mesa Verde and has lectured in classrooms of 400 at the university.
He is especially interested in showing people how biology is part
of their everyday lives and how each living being is affected
by every other living being. From his backyard he sees how the
Abert squirrel depends on the ponderosa pine for food and shelter
and how the ponderosa pine depends on the squirrel to help plant
its seeds. He sees how the squirrels lose the safety of their
homes and their source of food when the forests are cut down for
new homes unless trees are left in a way that allows the squirrels
to get from tree to tree without being exposed to their predators.
Sylvester enjoys storytelling as a way of sharing his excitement
about our wonderful world."
